Northern Style

Architectural Competition for a Housing Complex, 2000, Aomori Japan
Architects: Constantinos Kalisperas / George Katodrytis

A proposed public “landscape garden”, using the existing and new typology is proposed for the northern style housing complex in the city of Aomori.
By stretching the existing “fabric” and “wrapped around” the required housing programme, a hybrid “landwave” of multi-dimensional programmatic, environmental and spatial qualities is generated, allowing for multi-layered usage of the proposed large public space.
The individual homes are prefabricated dwellings, customize to maximize individual freedom and character, “empty plots” re-configured, creating an internal infrastructure, providing for a new “building ground”.
Using the aggressive environmental qualities of the city, the external “skin” of the proposal always re-animates its formal and programmatic qualities accordingly.
A diverse field of activities (winter-summer) can be activated within the boundaries of this proposed “magic carpet”.
