Eleftherias Square

European Architectural Competition for the Nicosia Municipality, 2005, Nicosia
Architects: Constantinos Kalisperas / Nikos Kouroussis Artist

The concept focuses on the creation of a dynamic multi-layered proposal based on two multi-dimensional programmatic and spatial Axes with Eleftheria Square as the focal point of reference.
The first Axes refers to existing and new programme, surrounding the Venetian Wall at Moat level and below Solomou and Eleftheria square, projecting further, beyond into the broader urban scale.
The Moat becomes a green zone, surrounding the Venetian Wall, enhancing the lifestyle of the area and its surroundings, offering a range of recreational and other facilities such as: art exhibitions, sculptural gardens, interaction of locals, exercise, spaces of deferent scale for rest and play, during day and night time.
At street level the projected Moat, connecting lower and upper level becomes a “membering”, connecting surrounding streets and allowing for controlled vehicular access, or a wide square, allowing for several activities.
